What to wear after a c-section: 13 essentials & outfit ideas to heal in style
“You’re going to need a c-section. We will start in 10 minutes”
My eyes filled with tears as the doctor said those words. After enduring 48-hours of failure to progress past 5cm dilated, a failed epidural, a swollen cervix, and developing a fever/infection, I had an very unexpected emergency C-section.
I didn’t plan on having a c-section so I didn’t have any of the essentials on hand (man, I wish I did!). Recovering from a c-section can be challenging, but wearing the right clothes can make a big difference in comfort and healing.

In this article, I’m going to share some c-section outfit ideas as well as supportive garments & items that can make your c-section recovery process so much easier and faster.
C-section essentials
These essentials help manage pain, protect the incision site, and provide much-needed support during the healing process. There are ALL products I used after my c-section:
Stomach girdle or stomach wrap
A stomach girdle or wrap offers crucial support to the abdominal area after a c-section. It helps reduce swelling and provides gentle compression, which can alleviate discomfort and promote healing. The hospital did provide me a girdle but I honestly wasn’t a fan. It bulged, wasn’t very comfortable, I needed help putting it on and it was very visible in clothing.
Personally, I preferred a stomach wrap as it felt more supportive and as I got smaller, I could still wear the stomach wrap (as opposed to having to constantly buy stomach girdles in different sizes as I got smaller).

High-waisted panties or diapers
High-waisted underwear or postpartum diapers are essential for c-section recovery. They provide coverage and protection for the incision site preventing irritation from clothing. Also, after giving birth you experience vaginal discharge which is called lochia (and it can be heavy and last for several weeks) so you’ll want some type of protection.
I absolutely LOVED the Amazon disposable underwear! I purchased the washable-period panties and I just wasn’t a fan. With the diapers, they’re super comfy and I could just throw em away after (you have enough laundry with a baby!). If you get the Amazon diapers, be sure to size up so they’re extra comfy!

Silicone scar tape
Silicone scar tape is a valuable tool for minimizing the appearance of c-section scars. It helps keep the incision site moisturized and protected, which can lead to improved healing and reduced scarring. They have different types like gel and tape but I think the tape is best as it actually protects your incision. With the gel, I found it got all over my clothes.

C-section ice-pack
A specially designed c-section ice-pack can provide much-needed relief from pain and swelling. These ice-packs are shaped to fit comfortably over the incision area, offering targeted cooling therapy. While this is optional, I do think it’s helpful if your incision hurts (which mine did a little the first week).

Very, very comfy house shoes
Soft, supportive houseshoes are a must-have for c-section recovery. They provide cushioning and stability as you move around the house, reducing strain on the body. Comfortable footwear can make a significant difference in overall comfort levels, allowing you to focus on healing and caring for their little one. Invest some high-quality house-shoes. Trust me on this.

Wrap dress
Wrap dresses are an excellent choice for new moms after a c-section. The adjustable waist provides a customizable fit as the body heals and changes. These dresses often offer easy nursing access, making them practical for breastfeeding mothers. After my c-section, I had an event to attend that I didn’t want to miss. A wrap-dress allowed me to look presentable while I was still healing so I do recommend at least one wrap dress in your closet for this very reason.

Rompers
Rompers offer a one-piece solution for post-cesarean comfort. The loose fit around the midsection prevents pressure on the incision site. Many rompers feature adjustable straps and buttons for easy nursing access, combining practicality with style. Personally, I LIVED in rompers my first month postpartum.

Hi Jacqueline, congrats on your new baby! Having a c-section can be such as traumatic experience and I wasn’t expecting recovery to be as hard as it was either! I’m so happy to hear these essentials are making it more manageable for you! You got this mama!
Thank you so much for this article. I just had my 3rd baby 2 weeks an ago via c section – it was my first c section and it felt traumatic.
The recovery has been harder than I expected but I agree with your essentials and that with preparation, it’s much more manageable.
It can feel isolating during the recovery because I can’t drive yet or do my normal activities yet. Loved the reminder that I’m not the only one who has or is experiencing this. Thank you again
