Pumping Like a Pro: 11 pumping essentials for moms

Whether you’re a new parent or have been around the block a few times, having the right pumping essentials can make a world of difference. When I started my pumping journey, I realized early on that the key to successful pumping lies in having the right tools and knowledge.

So today, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned through my own pumping journey and the pumping essentials you will absolutely want to have!

10 Breast Pump Essentials You’ll want to have!

When you are breastfeeding and pumping, having the right tools can make a significant difference in your comfort and convenience. Here are the key items you need to make your pumping journey easier and more efficient.

Breast Pump

A good breast pump is a must-have. It helps extract milk quickly and effectively. Look for one that is comfortable and has adjustable settings.

Single and double pumps are available; double pumps are better for saving time since they allow you to pump both breasts simultaneously and I highly recommend them.

Electric or Manual Breast Pump?

Deciding between electric and manual breast pumps depends on your needs. Electric pumps are quicker and require less effort, making them ideal for regular use. Manual pumps are portable and quiet, best suited for occasional pumping or travel.

During my pumping journey, I have purchased both! Personally, I like electric but I do keep a manual pump in my diaper bag for times when I need to pump and I’m not home!

Why I Like and Recommend the Spectra Pump

I’ve purchased a ton of pumps during my journey and my tops ones are the Medela Symphony pump and the Spectra pump.

The medela is over $1000 so it’s def not attainable for everyone. The Spectra pump is around $100-200, so a lot more affordable plus it is highly recommended for its efficiency and comfort.

The Spectra pump has adjustable suction levels and a massage mode to stimulate milk flow. It’s also known for its quiet operation, which is a huge plus if you’re pumping near your sleeping baby or in shared spaces. Plus it has a light for nighttime pumping (which was a bonus for me!)

Storage Bags/Bottles

Storing breast milk safely is crucial. Use breast milk storage bags or bottles that are specifically designed for this purpose. They should be BPA-free and have a secure seal to prevent leaks. Label them with the date and time to keep track of freshness.

Nursing Pads

Nursing pads help keep you dry and comfortable by absorbing any leakage between pumping sessions. They come in disposable and reusable options. Choose ones that fit well and are gentle on your skin to prevent irritation.

I leaked A LOT the first month and nursing pads saved me many times from outfit disasters! You will definitely want some nursing pads!

Nipple Cream

Nipple cream can soothe and protect your skin. Look for creams that are lanolin-based or all-natural to ensure they are safe for your baby. Apply it after each pumping session to prevent dryness and cracking.

My nipples hurt a lot during the first month so the nipple cream was a life saver.

Cleaning Supplies

Cleanliness is vital when it comes to breast pumps. Use brushes, sterilizing bags, and mild soap to clean the pump parts thoroughly after each use. Regular cleaning helps maintain hygiene and prevents milk contamination.

Cooler Bag for Storing Milk When You’re on the Go

A cooler bag is essential for storing expressed milk when you’re away from home. It keeps the milk at the right temperature, preserving its freshness. Choose one that has ice packs and enough space for multiple bottles or bags.

Labeling breast milk is crucial for organization. Use breast milk labels to record the date and time of expression. This helps you use the oldest milk first and ensures that your baby always gets the freshest milk possible.

Snacks and Water to Keep You Hydrated and Nourished!

I learned very early on that pumping can be energy-intensive, so keep snacks and water nearby. Seriously, I would be STARVING somedays before/after pumping and wanted to eat whatever was nearby.

Plus staying hydrated and nourished boosts milk production and keeps you feeling good throughout the day.

Track your pumping sessions and time with an app

Using an app to track your pumping sessions can make life a lot easier. It helps you keep an accurate record of when you pumped, how long each session lasted, and how much milk you expressed.

Apps can send reminders so you never miss a session. This consistency is crucial for maintaining your milk supply.

You’ll find many apps specifically designed for pumping. Some popular ones include:

  • Nara Baby App (What I use)
  • Baby Tracker
  • Pump Log
  • Milk Stash

These apps often come with additional features, like tracking feeding times and diaper changes, making them comprehensive tools for newborn care.

Many apps also allow you to log data for both sides separately. This can help you identify patterns and imbalances between your breasts. The data can be visually represented in charts and graphs. This makes it easier to spot trends and share information with your healthcare provider.

Using an app can also make you feel more organized. You’ll have one less thing to worry about during your hectic day. Lastly, many of these apps are user-friendly. They are designed to be intuitive, so you can start using them with minimal fuss.

Turning to technology for support can add a bit more peace to your daily routine. So, why not give one a try?

Conclusion

Preparing for your pumping journey may feel overwhelming at first. By focusing on the essentials, you can build a smoother experience.

Remember to prioritize comfort. Investing in a good pump and properly-fitting accessories can make a big difference. Also, stay positive and patient. It might take a little time to get used to the process, but your efforts are worth it.

Remember mama, you’re doing an amazing job. Celebrate your milestones and seek support when needed!
