You know what drives me crazy? When people lump skincare tips into one. Not everyones skin is the same, especially us black women.

Yes, our skin is different… and I can usually ALWAYS spot when a “how to do skincare for black women” article is NOT written by a black woman because they don’t take into account our unique problems such as hyper pigmentation, larger pores and eczema (yes, black people are more prone to eczema!)… BUT that doesn’t mean glass skin as a black woman is impossible. In fact, it’s pretty simple!

I’m a girlie who went from clear glass skin to my skin breaking out horribly and uncontrollably AND then back to glass skin! Getting my skin back beautiful, pimple free and clear took some steps that I stopped doing but once I started back, my skin got better!

Don’t believe me? Here’s a before and after
glass skin as a black womanNo filters or makeup! My skin went from dry, rough, patchy and tiny pimples EVERYWHERE to even, clear, soft and radiant! Don’t worry, I won’t gatekeep my tips!

Glass skin – that coveted dewy, luminous complexion – is achievable for Black women with the right approach.

How to get glass skin as a black woman (My 7+ secrets  that completely changed my skin!)

Achieving that coveted glass skin look is all about consistency and using the right products for your skin type. Here are some key tips to help you get that luminous, dewy complexion:

Wash your face twice a day

Cleansing is crucial for maintaining healthy, glowing skin. In the morning, use a gentle cleanser to remove any oils that built up overnight. At night, opt for a deeper cleanse to remove makeup, dirt, and pollutants from the day. This routine helps prevent clogged pores and breakouts, which can be more noticeable on darker skin tones.

Pro-tip: Double cleanse if you’re wearing makeup

Double cleansing is a game-changer for black women who wear makeup regularly. Start with an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup and sunscreen. Follow up with a water-based cleanser to remove any remaining impurities.

This method ensures a thorough cleanse without stripping your skin of its natural oils. It’s especially beneficial for preventing hyperpigmentation caused by leftover makeup residue.

Exfoliating every week (maybe even 2-3 time depending on your skin!)

Regular exfoliation is key to achieving that smooth, glass-like texture. It helps remove dead skin cells that can make your complexion look dull. For black skin, chemical exfoliants like AHAs or BHAs are often gentler and more effective than physical scrubs.

Start with once a week and gradually increase if needed. Be careful not to over-exfoliate, as this can lead to irritation and hyperpigmentation.

Use a toner to rehydrate your skin!

Toners are essential for balancing your skin’s pH and providing an extra layer of hydration. Look for alcohol-free toners with ingredients like rose water, aloe vera, or glycerin. These help soothe and moisturize your skin, reducing the risk of irritation and uneven skin tone.
Apply toner after cleansing and before your other skincare products. This step preps your skin to better absorb serums and moisturizers.

Serums are your friend. Use them to target skin concerns!

Serums are concentrated formulas that target specific skin concerns. For black women, vitamin C serums can help brighten the complexion and fade dark spots. Niacinamide serums are great for controlling excess oil and minimizing the appearance of pores.

Apply serums after toner but before moisturizer. Use different serums in the morning and evening to address various skin concerns throughout the day.

ALWAYS moisturize your skin

Moisturizing is non-negotiable for achieving glass skin. It helps maintain your skin’s barrier function and keeps it plump and hydrated. Look for moisturizers with ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, or shea butter.
For oily or acne-prone skin, opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulas. Don’t skip moisturizer even if you have oily skin – it’s essential for maintaining balance.

Yes, girl, you need to drink water and eat better

Yup, I’m going to say it! Hydration from the inside out is crucial for that glass skin glow. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water a day. Include foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins A, C, and E in your diet.
These nutrients help combat inflammation, protect against sun damage, and promote collagen production. Consider adding foods like sweet potatoes, salmon, and leafy greens to your meals. Once I started drinking more water and eating better, I saw an even bigger difference in my skin.

My secret tip?! Incorporate collagen into your diet

Collagen is essential for maintaining skin elasticity and that plump, youthful look. While our bodies produce collagen naturally, production decreases with age. Boost your intake through collagen supplements or collagen-rich foods like bone broth or supplements.

Another secret tip? Sleep with a satin or silk pillow case!

Switching to a satin or silk pillowcase can make a big difference in your skin’s appearance. These materials are gentler on your skin and hair compared to cotton. They help reduce friction, which can lead to creases on your face and frizzy hair.
