22 ways to style blonde hair on dark skin

Who says brown girls can’t go blonde? Perhaps you’ve been toying with the idea of going blonde but unsure if the golden hue will look right against your brown skin. Don’t worry sis, I got you!

Today, I’m sharing how to pick the right blonde for your dark skin, different blonde hairstyles to try for black women, and my tips for being a blonde bombshell.

If you are just starting off with going blonde, I highly recommend trying out temporary hairstyles such as blonde box braids, blonde wigs, and blonde extensions. That way, you can figure out what colors you like best without the pressure of it being permanent.

Additionally, there is a variety of different blonde hair color shades which means there’s at least one that will flatter you. Here are a few popular blonde colors and ways to style blonde hair on brown skin.

Platinum Blonde Hair On Dark Skin

Platinum blonde hair looks gorgeous on cool skin tones because of it’s icy white tint. If you’re warmer undertone, try a platinum blonde with more of a yellowish tint.

Beach Blonde on dark skin

Beach blonde hair gets its name from just that; hair that looks blonde because you spent too much time in the sun. The great thing about beach blonde is it can be adjusted to going warmer, cooler, lighter, or darker.

How to choose a blonde hair color for black women

Not every blonde shade will look right on you. The key is choosing a blonde hair color that looks flattering for your undertone. For example, a honey blonde is a warm color and looks best on warmer skin tones (think: Beyonce). Whereas a platinum blonde is more of a cool tone and will look best on cool skin tones (think Justin Skye).

How can you tell your undertone?

Here are a few questions to help you determine your undertone:
Do you look better in gold jewelry? You’re probably warm tone
Do you look better in silver jewelry? You’re probably a cool tone
If you look killer in both, you may be more neutral.

Tips for going blonde as a black women

Start off going slow

When starting off blonde, it’s best to go slow such as highlights or ombre the hair instead of all over color which can strip and damage your hair.

While it’s not required for you to go dark roots when going blonde, it tends to be easier maintenance since you will not need as many touchups as your hair grows.

Conditoner is your bestie

Make sure you are deep conditioning your hair since bleaching tends to dry out hair. Additionally, you will want to use products specifically created for color-treated hair. Here are a few top-rated products on Amazon:

Mielle babassu line is safe for color-treated hair, organic and sulfrate-free.

Sunny Isle products are great for African American hair that has been color-treated and is also sulfate-free.

Blondes have fun

Whether you’re rocking blonde bone straight hair, blonde box braids, or a classy blonde bob, have fun with it! The great thing about hair is its a reflection of us and can even be a reflection of our current mood (I’m known to switch up wigs depending on my current mood!)

As a blonde, give yourself permission to have fun!

What’s for dinner? My Easy Seafood Crab Platter!

When I was a child, I HATED seafood. I especially disliked crab legs because it seemed so barbaric eating the meat out of a carcass. Now I LOVE crab legs and my favorite is this easy seafood crab platter.

Random fact: My family had a cookoff last Christmas. I won with this recipe.

My family can’t get enough of this platter, and days like this when I crave seafood soooo bad, I have to make me a seafood tray featuring my cilantro garlic butter sauce to throw on top of all this deliciousness! Seafood trays can be pricey so a great way to cut the price is to make it yourself! It’s so easy and so delicious!

I LOVE king crab legs (my favorite… but pricey) but feel free to use whatever crab legs you like such as snow crab legs (which I use sometimes too). I also add shrimp, potatoes and corn because I already have a muffin top, I might as well to it. You can also add sausage which I add occasionally. If you want to eat a vegetable with it, I recommend artichokes.

I like to add lots of seafood seasoning (*cough* ol bay *cough*) to my tray. You can literally throw everything in one pot (minus the crab legs, which I like to steam in a separate pot with beer, lemon and ol bay seasoning). Again, seafood trays are easy. If it’s hard, you’re doing too much!

Crab Platter Ingredients:

4-6 King Crab Legs
Beer (I use whatever is cheap at the store)
Old Bay or Seafood Seasoning (to taste)
2 Lemons cut in half
Frozen Corn
Red Potatoes or any small potatoes
Shrimp
Sausage (optional)

Crab Platter Directions:

In one pot, bring 5 quarts of water to boil. Squeeze lemon juice into water and then add the lemon halves to water. Add seafood seasonings (to taste). I, personally, like to add a lot.

Add potatoes and allow to cook until tender (remember the smaller the potatoes, the quicker they cook!). Once tender add in frozen corn (5-8 minutes). Reduce heat to medium-low and add shrimp (should be completely submerged) about 5 minutes. Feel free to add more seafood seasonings as you add each component to the pot. If you’re adding in sausage, you would throw it in the pot right before the shrimp.

In a separate pot combine beer, seafood seasoning, and lemon halves. Bring to a boil. Turn heat down to medium, add crab legs and cover pot. Allow to steam for 10 minutes (crab legs should be red).

Cilantro Butter Garlic Sauce (for the Crab Platter)

2 sticks of melted unsalted butter
3 tbsp crushed garlic
8 tbsp. chopped fresh cilantro
1 tsp onion powder
Salt & Pepper(to taste)
1-2 tbsp of lemon juice

Directions: Add all of the butter sauce ingredients together and whisk together until its thick. Pour on the tray!

Now be prepared to DEVOUR! If you end up trying this recipe, please let me know!

I usually don’t post food recipes on this blog but my friends and family rave about this crab platter so much (and ask for the recipe) that I had to share! Why? Because sharing is caring!

DIY Dollar Tree Wall Plates

I have really, really been loving the whole DIY dollar tree movement and decided to create the DIY mirror collage that has been all over youtube and pinterest.

It was super early, inexpensive and I LOVE what the mirror does to my living room. So much so, that I decided I wanted more DIY dollar tree projects! This time silver plates that give off that medallion metal look!

I really wanted some wall decor that would add a little texture to my living room. I love wall medallions but they can be extremely expensive so much like my kitchen, I decided to get crafty! Since the liquid nails was just laying around from my kitchen project, this wall art cost me less than $10!

For this project you will need a few things:

  • Large Platter Plates (I got mine from the dollar tree, purchased about 8)
  • Board (also got from the dollar tree!)
  • Adhesive (I used liquid nails )

Line up 6 plates and glue each plate onto the board. Then glue two plates on top of the 6 for a 3D look.

Allow to dry for a few hours. Since the board and plates are really light, I was able to just nail the board down on my wall. It’s sturdy and secure this way.
